Lot Essay

Cf. Mankowitz, Wedgwood, plate 34 and Reilly, Wedgwood, plate 365.

The present mould and lot (pair of ones) were designed as table decorations. An outer shaped mould such as lot (fluted pyramid) would be filled with clear aspic and a decorative core inserted with holes in the core's base all owing for overflow. Once the aspic or jelly was set, the outer mold would be removed revealing the core with its painted decoration shimmering through the clear jelly.
