Lot Essay

Cf. Dr. Charles Avery, 'Missing and Presumed Lost: Some Ivory Portraits by David LeMarchand, 1674-1726', Country Life, June 6, 1985, pp. 1562-1564, for a discussion of the ivory portrait on which the present Rosso Antico example, made from moulds made by Hoskins & Grant is based.

Wedgwood's catalogue of 1779 lists the model as available in three sizes. The most popular body for the portrait was black basaltes. Rosso antico examples are rare.
