Lot Essay

As noted in Wedgwood's First Shapes Book, shape no. 93 was produced in eight sizes ranging from 5 1/2in. high to 18 1/2in. high. It could be ordered in a variety of bodies including Pebble, Gilt, Black, Etruscan and Etruscan Painted. According to Gaye Blake-Roberts, although the different variegated surfaces produced by Josiah Wedgwood have not yet been positively identified by name, it is probable that the colouration of the present examples is that referred to by him in a letter to Thomas Bentley as 'Holy Door Marble' (Wedgwood Museum, manuscript no. 25-18202).
