Lot Essay

Hella Robels believes the present painting to be the work of a pupil or follower of Snyders, and suggests that it may be a copy of a lost original dating from the teens (Liedtke, loc. cit., 1984, p. 244). The pyramidal structure of the composition are reminiscent of several large canvases by Snyders executed between 1613 and 1620
