MAKER'S MARK OF TIFFANY & CO., NEW YORK, 1873-1875

In the Japanese taste, each of vase form on spreading circular base, with pierced ear handles applied with foliage, the bases with geometric and swan decoration, the matte-finished bodies engraved with Japanese motifs including figures, tea equipage and games, with die-rolled borders, each with monogram in circle LHB, the interiors gilt, each marked, 3205/1797--height of sugar bowl 5 5/8in.

Tiffany's pattern books describe these pieces as "Sugar & Cream Jap. Ear Handles."

A sugar and creamer of this pattern but with different engraving and of slightly later date were sold Sotheby's, June 23, 1993, lot 72. A related bowl on stand also made before 1875 in the collection of Sam Wagstaff was sold in these Rooms, January 20, 1989, lot 132.
