Gorham's archives contain a photograph of this flagon labelled "TANKARD MARTELE" and with a fleur-de-lys, the company's symbol for works designed for the Paris Exposition of 1900. Some of Gorham's finest pieces of Martele silver were made for the Paris Exposition, where Gorham won the Grand Prix and gold medal for Codman's art nouveau "Martele" silver. Edward Holbrook, President of Gorham at the time, was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.

A Martele ewer of 1897, with closely-related foliate decoration and leaf-form handle joins, was sold in these Rooms, October 21, 1989, lot 23.
