Lot Essay

Goldsmith-Phillips, China-Trade Porcelain, p. 84, illustrates a Chandos ewer and basin in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and calls James Brydges, first Duke of Chandos, "one of the notable personalities of 18th century England" and "a splendid figure". He describes the Duke's sumptuous entertaining of such guests as Alexander Pope and Handel at Canons, the great London house for which this service was made. Tudor-Craig, Armorial Porcelain of the Eighteenth Century, illustrates a ewer from this service (p.7). A basin was sold at Christie's London, October 29, 1990, lot 227.
