CIRCA 1750

Enamelled front, back and in the center with the arms of the Anti-Gallican Society above the motto FOR OUR COUNTRY, the sides with large gilt boughs of chrysanthemum and peony clustered with smaller sprigs of berries and blossoms, a gilt scroll and shell border around the interior rim (interior with crazing and wear, overpainted cracks)--15¾in. (40cm.) diam.

The Anti-Gallican Society was formed in London in 1745 "To promote British Manufactures...and discourage the introduction of French modes" (see Howard, op. cit., p. 487). Hervouet and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnie des Indes à Decor Occidental, illustrate an Anti-Gallican punch bowl from the collection of the Museum of the United Grand Lodge of England, London (p. 331).
