A RARE BLUE AND WHITE EUROPEAN SUBJECT VASE
CIRCA 1700

Lightly moulded with three rows of petal-shaped panels, each painted in crosshatch strokes after its European engraving source with one panel of a lady holding a musket, another showing a lady with a falcon perched on her hand, and a third with a gentleman holding a dead hare, the ladies with hair coiffed à la mode Fontanges and the gentleman with elaborate wig and hat, alternating with three panels of vine-hung trees, the charcter 'yu' for 'jade' or 'precious thing' on the base (rim repair)--7in. A similarly decorated jar and cover was sold at Christie's London, June 8, 1983, lot 350, and is illustrated by Hervouet and Bruneau, op. cit., p. 68. See also Howard & Ayers, op. cit., pp. 77-80, where the authors discuss and illustrate a closely related group, including the famed 'Music Party', all based on French costume prints of the late 17th century.
