Lot Essay

The overlapping laurel leaf frame relates to a suite of furniture supplied by Thomas Chippendale for Sir Penistone Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne for Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire (illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, vol. II, 1978, p. 200, pl. 364). A suite at Windsor Castle, attributed to Chippendale, also features a laurel leaf frame and fluted baluster legs headed by acanthus as on the offered lot (ibid, p. 200, pl. 365).
