Lot Essay
This painting dates from Weeks' Indian period of the 1880's, and depicts horses being shown to two princely figures at the left (whom Weeks termed "Mahratta noblemen," and whose costumes he greatly admired) with the two figures in attendance being Persian. The circular device conjoined with the signature is the Moghul device, a sort of signature conceit, that Weeks used for many of his Indian paintings of the 1880's.
This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on Weeks by Ellen Morris, and we are grateful to her for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
