Lot Essay

The attribution to Dini of the present drawing is based on the record of a payment to him on 27 July 1624 'per un disegno della faciata'. The drawing may have served as the model for Regnart's engraving, which is the same size but in the same sense as the study. Both the drawing and the print record Maderno's design for the façade which, after his death in 1624, was altered by his successor Carlo Rainaldi
