Lot Essay

A record of the catafalque designed by Ferdinando Bibiena or by Francesco Bibiena in 1723. This may have been drawn in connection with Archittetura e Prospettiva published in 1740, which include records of earlier designs of catafalques including one erected in Vienna in 1715 to commemorate the death of King Louis XIV. The present study may be an unused study for the 1740 publication. A drawing of the same catafalque was sold at Drouot, Paris, 19 April 1988, lot 115, as Italian School, 18th Century. Comparable studies are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (nos. 1972.7131/12/39) and Berlin, S. Jacob, Italienische Zeichnungen der Kunstbibliothek Berlin, Berlin, 1975, nos. 920-3, illustrated
