Lot Essay

Drawings from the same sketchbook, dispersed at the Fatio sale in 1959, are in the Metropolitan Museum, the Copper-Hewittt Museum and sold at Christie's, London, 6 July 1993, lot 116, illustrated. A number of attributions have been suggested, including Mauro Tesi and Giuseppe Valeriani, but none has found favour. The drawings are clearly inspired by theatrical designs by Ferdinando and Giuseppe Bibiena, but the hand does not correspond with any known member of the family
