Lot Essay

Basoli began to make drawings of Egyptian and Oriental architecture from around 1811 onwards, partly inspired by books such as Vivant-Denon's, Voyage dans la Haute et Basse Egypte of 1802 and the Comte de Caylus's Antichità. Three volumes of these drawings, which Basoli utilised in his stage sets, are in the Accademia Clementina, Bologna
