The present drawings are preparatory designs, with minor variations, for engravings in reverse of the third plate and the verso of page five of the thesis presented by the Prince de Turrenne at the Collège de Clermont in 1679 entitled 'LUDOVICO MAGNO THESES ex Universa philosophia dicat et consecrat Ludovicus a Turre-Auverniae Princeps Turennius PROPUGNABIT IN AULA COLLEG.CLAROMONTANI SOCIET.IESU DIE 13 AUGUST .ANNO. MDCLXXIX'. According to Father C.F. Ménestrier, who proposed the subject and together with Father P. de la Rue contributed to the thesis, Sevin designed all fifteen engravings in the work, including the last signed plate, C.F. Ménestrier, Philosophie des Images, Paris 1682, p. 116.
Pierre-Paul Sevin, mainly known for his book and almanac illustrations, was engaged as painter to the Cardinal de Bouillon, uncle of the Prince de Turenne, on the advice of Father Ménestrier and it is probably the latter's patronage that ensured Sevin's involvement with the Commision
