Lot Essay

Marianne Roland-Michel suggests that the present drawing may have been intended to serve as an embellishment to a sacred text. The depiction of 'le triangle mystérieux qui symbolise l'union de la Sainte Trinité, [et] est éclatant de lumière' conforms to the traditional iconography of 'La Gloire', J.B. Badard, Iconologie tirée des divers auteurs, Parma and Paris, 1759
