Joe Brown coached boxing at Princeton University from 1937-1962 and was instrumental in regulating collage boxing as a competitive sport. In 1939, he also became Resident Fellow of Sculpture in the Creative Arts Program, a position which he held until 1962 when he became a full Professor of Art. In 1977, he retired from teaching.
Like his teacher, R. Tait McKenzie, Brown chose athletes as the subject of most of his sculptue, focusing on the anatomy of the body in action. The present unmarked example was cast by the Bedi-Makky foundry, Brooklyn, New York and given to Eugene Bedi by the sculptor.
