Lot Essay

The present bronze is part of the series of classical heads created by Nadelman in marble, wood and bronze circa 1910. For a full discussion of the importance of this series in the artist's oeuvre, please see Athena T. Spear's article "Elie Nadelman's Early Heads, 1905-1911" in the Allen Memorial Art Museum Bulletin, Oberlin College, v. 28, No. 3, Spring 1971.

Nadelman's early patrons, the Natanson brothers were fellow ex-patriates, who introduced him to other buyers. This enabled him to have bronzes cast by the top foundries of the day--Bingen, Valsuani and Rudier--foundries who also worked for Rodin.
