Lot Essay

This work, most likely executed between 1850 and 1855, was done for Henry R. Schoolcraft's six volume work entitled History and Stastistical Information Respecting the....Indian Tribes of the United States published between 1853-1856. The present work was illustrated in volume 5, plate 24, page 154. The Oneida Stone was on a high hill overlooking Lake Oneida and was used as a site for councils of war by the Oneida Indians. To call the tribe together, a bonfire was lit on its top which could be seen for miles.
