A very similar gueridon, stamped by Alexandre Maigret, from the collection of Lord Barnard at Raby Castle, Co. Durham, was sold at Christie's House Sale, 10-11 October 1994, lot 127.
Alexandre Maigret was a leading royal furniture supplier during the Empire period and in 1812 he claimed the title of tapissier et fabricant de meubles d'ébénisterie de S.M. l'Empereur et Roi de Rome. He was owed considerable amounts of money by the Garde-Meuble at the Restoration of the monarchy, of which he was paid very little indeed.
This table is characteristic of his work, using the highest quality mahogany with few mounts but in a markedly neo-classical way. A related gueridon with a star-shaped base was sold anonymously at Drouot Paris, 18 January 1988, lot 132
