Our national motto, "In God We Trust," was not authorized for U.S. paper money until July 11, 1955. Below the eagle is "In God is our Trust," one of the precursor mottos that appeared on Treasury notes in the 1860s. The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing does not possess an example of this note.
