Lot Essay

It is fascinating to find the maker's mark of William Gibson and J.L. Langman, the first directors of the Goldsmiths' and Silversmiths' Company, overstriking another. In 1898 the company was converted into a limited liability company. Langman equipped and maintained the Langman Field Hospital during the Boer War and was created a Baronet in 1906.
