MAKER'S MARK OF THE BARNARD BROTHERS, LONDON, 1836

Each in the form of a fountain, on square pedestal bases, rising to stop-fluted trumpet stems and egg and dart knops, the lower part chased with a circular calyx of flutes rising to an everted square bowl applied with a band of guilloche and applied with a swan at each corner under an egg and dart rim, the interior dish applied with palmette bud finial, the bases engraved with a crest, marked on rims and swans, also stamped BRIGHT & SONS, SHEFFIELD FECT.--11½in.(29.2cm.) high

Lot Essay

An identical compote by Emes and Barnard, 1825, was sold by Sotheby's, London, February 5, 1987, lot 158, where it was noted in the catalogue that design of similar inspiration was to be found in a candelabrum of 1828 sold in those Rooms, June 11, 1970, lot 620, and a cup and cover of 1824, sold December 15, 1966, lot 80.
