A REGENCY SILVER-GILT AND AGATE DESSERT SERVICE
MAKER'S MARK OF PAUL STORR, LONDON, 1817

Comprising twelve dessert forks and twelve dessert knives with silver-gilt blades chased with stylized waves and flowers, with tapering polished agate handles, marked on tines and blades in fitted wood case, the cover with a brass plaque inscribed THE RT. HONBLE. THE COUNTESS OF PORTSMOUTH (24)

Lot Essay

Mary Anne, eldest daughter of John Hanson of Bloomsbury Square, married John, 3rd Earl of Portsmouth as his second wife March 7, 1814. Some time about 1820 however the Earl became insane and the marriage was dissolved by a decree of Chancery in 1823 following seventeen sittings of the Commissioners in Lunacy. The Earl died at the age of 86 in 1853.
