A similar Exeter example by Pentecost Symonds was sold in these Rooms, October 27, 1987, lot 378, while a pair by Samuel Blachford of Exeter was sold by Sotheby's, New York, April 26, 1985, lot 112. Michael Clayton in the Collector's Dictionary of the Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America, 1985 ed., describes this form of sauceboat as rare. He illustrates an example by Edward Feline, London, 1740, and refers to one by Thomas Stoddard, of Newcastle, 1743. An American example with maker's mark only DI is in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
It is of interest to note that in the Nanking Cargo slae (Christie's, Amsterdam, May 1, 1986, lots 4,066-4,130) there were no less than 259 Chinese blue and white porcelain examples dating from circa 1750 which were clearly derived from this English form.
