BEARING MARKS FOR LONDON, 1801, MAKER'S MARK OF JOHN ROBBINS, AN ALTERED PIECE

Of circular form, the dish slightly convex chased with a calyx of acanthus and stylized palmettes, centering a smaller calyx of acanthus and a matted boss, the border chased with scrolling acanthus and shells on a matted ground, with molded rim, the border engraved with the initials CR surmounted by a crown and, on the other side, with the initials AF enclosed by the Order of the Garter, and surmounted by a Royal Ducal coronet, marked on reverse border--13 3/8in.(34cm.) diameter

The initials C.R. are those of Queen Caroline, Consort of George III. The initials A.F. are those of Adolphus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, 5th son of George III and Queen Caroline.
