Lot Essay

This French bergere form, with reed-wrapped columnar legs and plinth-supported voluted arms, reflects the 'antique' style popularised by Richard Brown's furniture pattern-book Rudiments of Drawing Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture of 1820. However, chairs of related form had been introduced prior to this in the Drawing Room at Tatton Park, Cheshire, as part of the furnishings carried out under the direction of the architect Lewis Wyatt (d.1853)
