On his second visit to America (1867-68) Dickens purportedly only had his photograph taken by Gurneys in New York, as he disliked sitting for photographers. The negatives were then sold to photographers in Boston and Washington. This print was one apparently made by Gardner's Washington studio sometime in 1868.
