Church was one of the group of writers and artist in Paris during the twenties and was a friend of both Hemingway and Sherwood Anderson. "Here the post-war disillusion and the post-war liberation are united in the physical enjoyment of living and the pains of love. Perhaps that is what expatriation was about."--Connolly, p. 53.
