Lot Essay

Although previously attributed to Pierino da Vinci, the attribution will probably remain anonymous, as the statue was copied by every major and aspiring sculptor visiting Rome in the 16th century. The present marble depicts the head of the elder son from the Laocöon, which was discovered in 1506.
