Lot Essay

Active during the late 18th century and into the early years of the 19th century, Lucas de Montigny (1747-1810) was known for portraiture, particularly of actors, philosophers and revolutionary heros. Although other examples of this bust exist, the identity of the sitter is still questioned. Traditionally it is presumed to be one of the Montgolfier brothers, the first hot air baloonists.
