The first letter describes Hellman's impressions of Russia during wartime: "...I was met at the plane by...Eisenstein, who is a charming man. I think you will be pleased to know that they know all about you. I have no plans as yet. There was talk last night of my going to Leningrad and the front. But for a few weeks I would like to sleep in a bed and wash underwear..."
