According to Dr. Ellen K.Moris, "This grisaille was probably executed in Ahmedabad, India, in November, 1882. A very similiar bullock cart appears in a larger painting datable to then and elements of it serve as a model for a painting of a wedding carriage, with more elaborate trappings added."
