Lot Essay
According to Dr. Ellen K. Morris, "The model for the wedding carriage in this grisaille is painted in full-colored splendor, including bright red trappings, gold dome an silver harnesses, in another painting, 20 x 30in. (Sotheby's New York, 19th Century European Paintings sale, May 26, 1994, lot 66). That painting was executed in Ahmedabad, India, in November, 1882, and it is possible the grisaille stems from that date. The scene in this grisaille shows a Hindu bride being escourted to her wedding ceremony, at another location."
