A ROYAL ARMORIAL SOUP PLATE
CIRCA 1795

Painted in the center with the arms of England as borne by the Kings of England between 1714 and 1801, encircled by the ribbon of the Order of the Garter and with the helm, crest and supporters of the Prince of Wales, for George, Prince of Wales, later Prince Regent and King George IV, all within an underglaze blue diaper trellis border (enamels on shield worn, short center crack)--9¾in. (24.8cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This service, made for the Prince of Wales, was used at the great Carlton House banquet of 1795, and was reportedly given sometime afterwards to Mrs. Fitzherbert, the Prince's mistress. See Howard, op. cit., p. 738.
