AN ARMORIAL SOUP PLATE

The center enamelled with a rococo shield painted en grisaille with Cupid holding a flaming heart above the motto SILENS ARDERE, the well and rim decorated in Meissen style with four panels of fruit sprigs on a ground of moulded scrollwork and scattered enamelled flowers and fruit, the back with a border of gilt bamboo entwined with famille rose grapes and roses (two rim chips)--9 1/8in. (23.2cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This decoration, inspired by the Meissen 'new Dulong pattern', is known in at least two other variations of motto and shield, one with the arms of Demont of Soumange, Liège, Belgium. See Christie's London, May 11, 1992, lot 83 and November 2, 1992, lot 49.
