Lot Essay

Du Boulay, op. cit., p. 296, illustrates a nearly identical King Charles spaniel along with a more typically decorated plain iron-red example. The breed is believed to have been popularized in the reign of Charles II (1660-85) and, like the pug dog, was the result of breeding with a dog brought from China.
