Lot Essay

The year 1939 was the first year that Grosz and his family spent vacationing in Truro, Cape Cod. I remember well that he would bicycle off early in the morning with a small painting box, paper and water supply and spend the whole morning sketching, returning in the afternoon to swim at Longhook Beach. The Cape Cod works...represent a completely different side of his multifold talent. He certainly was quite happy...to leave the political commentary alone and concentrate on simple nature and natural subjects.
