Lot Essay

Our painting is another version of Dauzats' large scale work of the same subject in the Louvre. In 1829, after traveling extensively throughout Europe, Dauzats went to Egypt, Syria, Palestine and Turkey. Here he was fascinated by the remote and almost inhospitable locations that he found, such as the Monastery of St. Catherine at Mt. Sinai. This location was also described by the novelist, Alexandre Dumas père in his Quinze Jours au Sinai (Paris, 1841).

This painting will be accompanied by a photo certificate from Ghislaine Plessier.
