This oil sketch is a study for the reclining female figure in the lower left of Landelle's Les Femmes de Jérusalem Captives à Babylone in the Musée Ingres in Montauban. Landelle made several preparatory drawings for this well-known paintng, including several black chalk studies for the figure in our oil sketch.
