The original English copies were withdrawn from the London market due to Tenniel's dissatisfaction with the printing of his illustrations. Carroll agreed and had the entire edition withdrawn from the London market. These copies were then sold to D. Appleton & Co. of New York, who issued them as the first American edition in 1866 with the Cancelled title.
