MILTON, JOHN. The History of Britain, That part especially now call'd England. From the first Traditional Beginning, continu'd to the Norman Conquest. Small 4to, contemporary calf, ruled in blind, rebacked with most of original spine laid down, rear cover worn in a few spots, a few leaves with torn corners (not touching text), some light staining at fore-margins in last third of the text. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the Allestry imprint, engraved frontispiece portrait of Milton by Faithorne, with the errata leaf at end. Pforzheimer 710; Grolier, Wither to Prior, II, 196; Wing M2119. Allestry died within months after the book was issued; the following year his successor, Spencer Hickman, substituted a cancel title with his own name in the imprint.
