The Report is "one of the most important documents in the history of the first half of the nineteenth century. Its recommendations included for the first time national responsibility for drainage, cleaning of streets, paving, light and water supply, and a national health and burial service. The Health Board of 1848, the Local Government Board of 1871 and today's Ministry of Health (1919) are directly traceable to Chadwick's report." -- PMM 313.
