Lot Essay

Galton (1822-1911) followed up several earlier suggestions on the use of fingerprints and made a thorough study of the subject. This work led to the appointment in 1899 of a Royal Commission which came out in favour of the adoption of the system by the British police forces. Galton also made important contributions to the study of heredity and genetics.
