Lot Essay

"Iceland is the main source of all Norse literature and history, and if one name must be chosen to stand for the whole body of literature which has come down... the justest choise may well be that of Snorri Sturlason... Snorri's contribution to the literature of Iceland is one of inestimable importance. It was he who collected and preserved the great prose Edda... Even more important than this is Snorri's own contribution, the great collections of the Sagas of Norse Kings called the Heims Kringla, first published in full in 1697 in the original Icelandic, with translations into Latin and Swedish, edited by Johann Peringskiöld..." -- PMM 168.
