Lot Essay

Colyer, between 1869 and 1871, served as a special United States Indian Commissioner, visiting tribes throughout Indian Territory--now Oklahoma, northern Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and parts of Alaska. He made numerous sketches, drawings and watercolors of these travels, some of which he later executed in oil and exhibited at the National Academy and the Philadelphia Centennial. The present watercolor is from his time spent out West.
