Lot Essay

The Eicholtz portrait of Mrs. Hamil was painted circa 1815-1820. According to a previous owner, Hannah Hamil "was buried from 235 South 11th St., Philadelphia. The service was in St. John's Roman Catholic Church, and the cemetary was the old Cathedral in Philadelphia. She died 1858 and was seventy-nine years old." The portrait of her husband may have been painted by a student of Eicholtz.
