Lot Essay

Cyril Cook in the Life and Work of Robert Hancock, 1948, item 112, illustrates the design source of the cover scene, a print from The Compleat Drawing Book, third edition, published by Robert Sayer in 1762, which he attributes to Robert Hancock. He states that the subject is after the original by N.C. Cochin Jr., circa 1745 and it 'does not seem to be recorded on porcelain and enamel.' However, the scene painted in colors in the interior of a Meissen snuff-box is recorded by B. Beaukamp-Markovsky Catalogue of 18th Century Porcelain Boxes, 1988, fig. 28.
