Lot Essay

Michael Clayton in The Collectors Dictionary of Siver and Gold of Great Britian and North America, 1985 ed., page 271, states that 'early survivals (of penners) are all of 17th century date, having a compartmenmt for ink, another for pens (short quills) and the finial usually forming a seal face. They are in fact the forerunner of the travelling ink-well...they are seldom fully marked.'
